Herb Gardens for the Minimalist Kitchen... Get Your Garden Growing Indoors

If you’ve ever dreamed of having a garden full of fresh herbs right in your kitchen, your dream is about to become a reality.

Having an herb garden indoors doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With the right tools and some creative ideas, you can quickly transform your kitchen into an herb-growing paradise.

Keep reading to learn more about easy, budget-friendly indoor herb garden ideas... Happy Gardening!

    Windowsill Herb Garden

One of the easiest ways to start an herb garden is with a windowsill planter. Windowsills are perfect for herbs because they get plenty of natural light and airflow which is essential for growing herbs indoors.

This is one of the most classic ways to create an indoor herb garden — and it might just be the simplest! All you need are some small pots, soil, seeds or seedlings, and lots of sunshine.

To keep things organized, consider investing in a windowsill planter. These come in all types of materials such as wood, metal, and plastic so there’s something that will fit almost any decor style.

You can buy stylish wooden planters or herb pots that fit perfectly on your windowsill, or you can get creative and upcycle old mason jars, teacups, or other small vessels into herb gardens. Just make sure whatever container you choose is big enough for the roots of your herbs and has ample drainage holes at the bottom.

    Countertop Herb Garden

If you have a little bit more room on your countertops, then why not try growing an indoor garden right on your countertop? The best part about this idea is that it looks great and supports easy recipes and creating simple healthy meals no matter what type of plants you choose — from basil, oregano, or rosemary.

Just make sure your plants get enough sunlight. If not, invest in some grow lights so they can continue thriving year-round.

Vertical Gardens | Hanging Herb Garden

Vertical gardens are great if you’re short on space but still want to have a mini herb garden with a large variety of herbs. How? Consider hanging herbs from hooks on the wall or ceiling.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to damage your walls with nails and screws, try using tension rods instead. This way, you can hang multiple tiers of pots from rods without having to drill any holes in your walls.

Whether you use hooks or tension rods, just make sure they’re extra-secure so that they don’t fall once the plants start growing heavier.

When you buy your hangers or rods double-check the recommended weights that each hanger or rod supports... and remember to consider that your plants will be a bit heavier after you water and as they grow bigger.

Finally, make sure they can get enough sunlight and water, and you’ll be able to pick fresh herbs whenever you need them.

    ♡ T.I.M.E. TIP

This style looks great in modern homes or tiny houses and is perfect for those who don’t have much countertop space.

    DIY Indoor Herb Gardens

You could also consider repurposing an old dresser or cabinet into a DIY herb station. All it takes is some paint and hardware supplies like drawer pulls and casters (for added mobility). Once the pieces are painted and put together, add planter boxes on each shelf level filled with soil and herbs... and voila!

You now have an adorable rolling herb station that won’t take up too much room in your kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions for Indoor Herb Garden Ideas...

    • Wondering which herbs to grow at home? The top five most popular herbs for indoor gardens are basil, oregano, chives, mint, and thyme. All of these herbs are relatively easy to care for and can be used in a variety of recipes.

    • Rosemary, basil, parsley, cilantro, and oregano are some of the herbs that can be grown indoors all year round. These herbs need plenty of sunlight and water but can thrive in almost any environment as long as they’re cared for properly.

    • Dependent on the type of herb, some will require more direct sunlight than others. I recommend researching each type of herb you choose for the ideal sunlight exposure to encourage a healthy growth.

Generally speaking, most herbs need at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day to thrive indoors. So make sure you place your plants near a window that gets plenty of sunlight.

    • Unfortunately, yes... It is possible. But, in my experience, indoor herbs have not attracted unwanted pests if the plant is free from pests before it enters your home.

The best way to prevent this is by first choosing plants that are free of pests from a premium garden center, using a high-quality pre-packaged soil, and keeping your plants clean and free of excess moisture or dead leaves.

Whether you’re looking for a way to spruce up your kitchen or simply want fresh herbs every day without having to make “last minute” runs to the grocery store — these easy indoor herb garden ideas are just what you need!
