Say Goodbye to Kitchen Clutter... Kitchen Decluttering Tips for the Minimalist
Room by room, house by house, people are striving to create a home that is full of simplicity and minimalism. But where to start? Many people don't even realize how much “stuff” they have accumulated over the years... Until they start to declutter and come face-to-face with areas full of clutter that feel more like "mountains of clutter".
It can seem like an overwhelming task to rid your home of all the clutter, but it doesn't have to be!
Let's take it one step at a time, starting with creating a clutter-free kitchen...
Declutter One Drawer At A Time
When you approach kitchen clutter (or any other room for that matter), it helps to break it down into small chunks by starting with drawers or cabinets. Start with one drawer, pantry shelf, or kitchen cabinet at a time.
Start by taking everything out of each drawer and cabinet. Put similar items together before assessing what needs to be kept or thrown away. Be ruthless — if it’s something you haven’t used in a while, chances are that you don’t need it anymore.
Once you have finished decluttering each drawer and cabinet, put back only the most important items that are essential for everyday use.
I recommend starting with drawers or kitchen cabinets because it’s less visible than other areas of the house. This way you won't become overwhelmed and discouraged by seeing too many items all at once.
And it creates small decluttering "success stories" that you can revisit for motivation when you start to tackle more overwhelming areas. It is quite an adrenaline rush to open that decluttered cabinet or drawer and realize... "my whole life could look like this!"
Organize Your Countertops
Kitchen counters represent the most valuable space in your kitchen. So, clear off all the counters so that only necessary items remain — especially target small appliances like coffee makers or blenders unless you use them every day. And if there is something you rarely use, store it somewhere else or donate it to charity.
Use baskets or containers to store small items such as utensils or spices — this will help keep them organized as well as save space on your countertop.
Finally, try using trays to organize larger items such as remotes or keys — this will also prevent them from being scattered across your countertop.
Declutter Your Fridge
Let's face it, our pantries and refrigerators can get pretty cluttered over time too! Take a visual inventory of what foods are inside and make sure everything is edible and within acceptable food expiration dates.
Get rid of any food that has expired (no matter how much we want to hold onto our favorite snacks). Take everything out of the fridge, sort through what needs to be kept, and throw away anything that has gone bad.
Wipe down shelves with mild soap and water before putting everything back in place (including condiments).
It's also a good idea to label food containers with dates so they don't get forgotten about in the back of your fridge!
Be Ruthless... Ask the Hard Questions
When going through each area, be ruthless in your decision-making process. Ask yourself questions such as “Do I use this often?” or “Does this item add value to my life?”
If the answer is no, consider donating or recycling it instead. You'd be surprised by how many gizmos and gadgets we think we need but never use!
